The Psychobard Story
From Duke PhD in the Classics to alternative musician and founder of animated series
Rob Dudley (Psychobard) has spent his life enthralled by the voices of the past—dead poets from Homer to Pound—and fueled by the sounds of alternative rock, from Green Day to Radiohead. His obsession with the rhythm of language and the musicality of great dialogue drove him to earn a PhD in Classics at Duke University, where he specialized in ancient theories of poetry and rhetoric. For Rob, these timeless principles hold the secret to creating art that resonates, endures, and electrifies audiences.
Today's evolution of animated features and series presents a golden opportunity for this fusion of music, comedy, and lyrical storytelling. Just as Aristophanes struck a chord in ancient Athens, modern classics like The Simpsons and South Park—with their sharp humor, occasional musical numbers, and poetic prose—prove Quintilian’s timeless maxim: great prose edges on poetry, and great poetry edges on prose. These are the poets of our age.
Rob’s own animated series, Rockit Dante and the Devil Dolls, is a bold satire on the burnout culture of modern economics and the chaos of the music scene. With a psychedelic art style reminiscent of Midnight Gospel, the show blends the dark erotic energy of Rocky Horror Picture Show with the evolving, irreverent tone of Netflix’s Aggretsuko. Its twisted pop anthems and raw alternative rock vibes explore a love that’s terrifying, painful, and sublime—far from rom-com clichés. Instead, it channels the unapologetic passion of Catullus, Ovid, and the Greek lyric poets.
Still in development, Rockit Dante and the Devil Dolls is Rob’s vision of a modern classic, waiting for the right production team to bring its darkly provocative world to life.
